About: how taxprotecc started

Hi, I am Trs, the developer of taxprotecc. As an investor, I ran into what this app now solves while doing my own tax return.

A summer afternoon that did not end

In the summer of 2026 I meant to spend an afternoon working out the tax on my Trading 212 account. Then it turned out that every sale has to be matched with its purchases, both converted at their own day's MNB rate, dividends grossed up with the foreign tax credited, and old purchases restated for stock splits. Here is the full list.

So, as you would expect from a developer, I did not do it by hand. I automated it. The irony was not lost on me: automating it took far longer than doing it by hand would have. But now it takes anyone a few minutes, including me next year.

Research, then a lot more development

The calculation is only half the job. The other half is getting every rule right: the SZJA and SZOCHO acts, the NAV form guides, the dividend rates in the tax treaties, the end of the US treaty in 2024, the source country of ADRs, the SZOCHO cap. I noted the source next to every rule, and more than 800 automated tests check that the figures stay right to the forint.

After Trading 212 came Revolut, then IBKR and XTB (beta), an encrypted desktop app, a browser quick check and an XML file for the NAV return (beta).
