Hungarian tax on interest from your broker: SZJA and SZOCHO
Several brokers pay interest on uninvested cash, Trading 212 and Revolut among them. That interest is taxable in Hungary, and the broker does not withhold the Hungarian tax for you.
How much tax?
- SZJA (personal income tax): 15% of the full interest.
- SZOCHO (social contribution tax): 13% if the savings were opened on or after 1 July 2023. It has no cap, and it does not count towards the SZOCHO cap on dividends.
If your account was opened before 1 July 2023, whether later interest carries SZOCHO is not clear-cut. Ask an accountant in that case.
Example
You received 50,000 Ft of interest in the year (each payment converted at its day's MNB rate), on an account opened in 2024.
| Interest in forints | 50,000 Ft |
| SZJA 15% | 7,500 Ft |
| SZOCHO 13% | 6,500 Ft |
| Due in total | 14,000 Ft |
The catch: many small payments
Several brokers credit interest often, even daily. Each payment is converted at its own day's MNB rate (which rate?), so one year's interest can be hundreds of lines. Converting the yearly total at one rate is not accurate.
Interest goes on its own line in the return, separate from ETÜ and from dividends.
