Which MNB exchange rate to use for Hungarian tax on shares
Income from a foreign broker is declared in forints. As a rule you convert at the official exchange rate of the Hungarian National Bank (MNB), and which day's rate matters.
Which day's rate?
| Item | MNB rate of which day |
|---|---|
| Buying shares or ETFs (cost) | the day of the purchase |
| Selling shares or ETFs (proceeds) | the day of the sale |
| Broker fees | the day the fee was paid |
| Dividends, interest | the day it was credited |
| Foreign tax withheld | the day it was paid, or optionally the last day of the year |
So the gain on one sale involves two different rates: the purchase day's and the sale day's. That is why converting the broker's USD or EUR profit at a single rate is wrong (example in the FIFO guide).
Weekends and holidays
The MNB publishes rates on working days only. If there is no rate on the day of the trade or payment, use the last rate published before it. Example: 23 October 2026 (a Friday) is a Hungarian public holiday, but the New York exchange is open. A sale that day takes the rate of Thursday 22 October. A dividend credited on a Sunday takes Friday's rate.
If the MNB does not quote the currency
- For a currency without an MNB rate, you convert to euros first (at that day's euro rate of the currency), then to forints at the MNB euro rate.
- Many London shares are quoted in pence (GBX), a hundredth of a pound: divide by 100 first, then convert at the MNB pound rate.
An optional alternative
The law also allows converting every foreign currency item of the year at the MNB rate of the 15th day of the month before the income was received. If you choose it, you apply it consistently for the whole year. The daily rate is more common, and it is what taxprotecc uses.
Where to get the rates
The MNB website lets you look up the official rates by day and download them to Excel. In an active year that is hundreds of look-ups, and it is easy to shift a row. taxprotecc downloads the official MNB rates and picks the right one for every day, the last published rate on weekends and holidays.
